What is a Helicobacter pylori breath test?

A Helicobacter pylori breath test is a simple, non-invasive way to detect infection in the stomach. It measures urease activity after you drink a small solution, helping diagnose gastritis and ulcers, and guiding treatment.

What the breath test can help diagnose

A Helicobacter pylori breath test helps manage infection associated with common gastric conditions.

How the Helicobacter pylori breath test works

The test is simple and completed in one visit at our Melbourne location. It involves drinking a solution and providing breath samples for accurate detection.

1

Book and collect your capsule

Email us to arrange collection and pay when you pick up your urea capsule. Before testing, fast for 12 hours where possible, or at least 4 hours, and avoid antibiotics and PPIs for six weeks.

2

Complete the breath test at home

Take the urea capsule with water as instructed and provide the required breath samples. Breath collection takes around 240 seconds, with the full test taking about 10 minutes.

3

Return your test

Bring your completed test back to the clinic within two weeks. Your results will then be processed and provided to you for follow-up. A referral is not required to complete the test. However, patients with a referral may be eligible for a small Medicare rebate.

FAQs

Find answers to common questions about helicobacter pylori breath testing, including how it works and what to expect.

How do you test for Helicobacter pylori?

Helicobacter pylori is commonly tested using a urea breath test. You drink a small solution and provide breath samples to detect bacteria in the stomach. This non-invasive test is accurate and widely used to diagnose active infection and guide treatment.

What is the most accurate test for H. pylori?

The urea breath test (UBT) is considered one of the most accurate tests for detecting active H. pylori infection. It measures urease activity in the stomach and is commonly used in Australia for both diagnosis and confirming eradication.

How do I prepare for a pylori breath test?

Preparation usually includes fasting for several hours and stopping certain medications, such as antibiotics and acid-suppressing drugs. You may need to stay off proton pump inhibitors like Somac and Nexium for 4–6 weeks. Always follow your doctor’s instructions.

How long does a Helicobacter pylori test take?

The breath test procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes. It is done at a collection centre and fits easily into a normal day, with no recovery time required afterwards.

Is the H. pylori breath test safe?

Yes, the test is safe and uses a very small amount of radioactivity. The level of radiation exposure is minimal and considered safe for diagnostic use. It is a non-invasive procedure with very low risk for most patients.

What happens if my test result is positive?

If your result is positive, your doctor will recommend treatment to eradicate the infection. This usually involves a combination of medications. A follow-up breath test may be arranged to confirm the infection has cleared.
