FMT Melbourne – Faecal Microbiota Transplant
Healthy bacteria, or flora, in the human gut plays a critical role in our health. It helps us to absorb the nutrients our bodies need, prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and helps fight virus and other microorganisms that can cause disease.
If our gut flora is missing or unhealthy, our bodies cannot effectively fight disease.
The good news is that gut flora can be re-established to its natural healthy composition to improve your gut and overall health, through the process of a Faecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT). A FMT involves the controlled transfer of donor flora from the faeces of a healthy human donor into the bowel of a person whose flora is missing or unhealthy.
FMT is successful in treating an inflammatory condition of the large intestine, known as Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). FMT is a gold standard treatment in Australia and other parts of the world for relapsing CDI that is untreated and unresponsive to antibiotics.
FMT may also be beneficial for people with irritable bowel syndrome, intestinal dysbiosis/colitis, Crohn’s disease, autism, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, obesity and many other conditions that are untreatable and with recurrent symptoms. FMT is largely classified as an experimental procedure for these conditions until more research determines whether it is an effective cure.

How do I become a donor for FMT recipients?
If you are interested in becoming a FMT donor, we’d love to hear from you.
To become a donor, you will first be asked to complete a questionnaire before undergoing comprehensive blood testing and faecal screening to ensure your faecal material is healthy and safe for our patients.
All donors are screened for parasitic, bacterial and viral infections including HIV, Hep A, B and C, CMV, HTLV, EBV, H.Pylori and other pathogens. Donors are also tested for thyroid and liver function, folate, Vitamin B12 and electrolyte levels. A full blood cell examination is also done.
The screening and testing is free for donors. If you are accepted as a donor, you will be paid each time their FMT donation is used.
